I am getting my USDA license very soon, (inspection set for monday the 18th) and I was pondering the public opinion on breeders License vs Brokers license. I was originally going to just get a breeders license, as that is what I am. But then I ran into a couple situations that would require a brokers license, such as helping an owner find a mate for a joey I sell... if I have any part in the exchange of money or gliders, I would be acting as a broker. Or if I was to be responsible for shipping gliders from myself and another breeder, I have to have a brokers license. With the above situations, I decided to get a brokers license. I will NOT be profiting from the exchange of gliders or money (as is assumed by a broker), I will always be honest... I just want the freedom to be the middle-man for my customers. I will also be able to write off my expenses involved in recieving gliders and travel, etc. BUT... I have heard some say that I may get looked down upon by getting the Brokers license... what is the public consensus on the brokers license?

I don't think people are against the broker license necessarily but rather the stigma that traditionally goes with being a "broker". If you are simply do as you said above, I don't see a problem. Maybe others won't agree. I see a problem when a broker recieves quantities of animals to sell that they did not breed. HTH

I see a problem when a broker recieves quantities of animals to sell that they did not breed. HTH I do too! Which is why I wanted to ask this question! I NEVER intend to do what the community considers "brokering" but what I may do on occasion might fall legally into that catagory. I won't make a dime off of any gliders that I don't breed...it will just be nice to not worry about which way I can and can't handle reccommending/finding/getting mates for my gliders.

I agree with Kris, it's not the license people have a bad taste for but "actually" brokering in the normal sense people associate with it. The situation you describe has put MOST breeders in the middle man position, due to helping choose a companion and helping with getting gliders from point A to point home, either thru combined shipping or railroading. Now if you run out and buy up every joey you can and then resell to make yourself some cash expect that negative attention you were concerned about. LOL

NEVER! Besides... I have signed contracts for 5/11 of the animals I have currently. I would never "buy and sell" without the breeder knowing EXACTLY where their baby was gonna go.

One breeder also does rescue work. Because she is an active breeder with her USDA license, they required her to also get her broker's license to rehome the rescues even though she didn't charge for the rescues (beyond maybe neutering fees). One way to look at it is...if you get both, then you have all the bases covered and don't have to worry.

It covers your bases, and the only reason people in the community would frown is if you did it to make profit. Though for myself I have seen no need for one, and it isnt a very common thing to do as usually when the potential glider owner wants a glider from another breeder as well they need to speak to that breeder and work out contracts etc with them. There arent many reputable breeders who are willing to just hand over their gliders without speaking to the new owner in some way at first, and if they are speaking to them, answering questions etc, its just as easy for them to handle the sale of their own glider.... if your not going to charge a fee for handling or holding the animal I dont know if its technically brokering, especially if no money exchanges hands. If the glider is just staying at your house a couple weeks tell new family can get the gliders well ive always considered that more like babysitting Though it sounds like you have what you want to do all figured out already.

Truth is, there is nothing wrong with brokering animals providing you are not supporting animal mills to do so. The bad taste everyone has about brokers is from those like PP and Tropical Attitude Pets that sell mill bred gliders to anyone that has the money without regard to the well being of the gliders.
And that is not what you are talking about doing at all.

If the glider is just staying at your house a couple weeks tell new family can get the gliders well ive always considered that more like babysitting Just wanted to clarify for you Tianna... the inspector here says that if I have any part of the exchange of money OR gliders, then I am brokering. So, for example, if when I meet Nicole to deliver Little Man, I pick up a female that is a good mate for a joey of mine... it's brokering EVEN if she is just in my car! So staying at your house counts as brokering since you "acquire" the glider. And for example, I have a customer who prefers to pay cash, if I find a female for his joey, I can collect his cash and send a paypal payment to the other breeder.

Okay I am confused I was told you could either be a breeder or a Broker according to my local USDA you can not be both. And I can transport gliders that are not mine provided I am not being paid to do it. IE Railroading Olivia and Lauren's to Teresa and Sherri is not concerned brokering, but if I was being paid gas money or other monetary gain then it would be.
